the perfect piece: charley harper and todd oldham for fishs eddy

I find myself buying Charlie Harper-illustrated kids books for the little ones in my life all the time. And at their age they appreciate the vibrant colours, and sweeping, bold lines that make focusing easy for their new little eyes and keep their curious minds entertained. I love the playfulness of the Charlie Harper images, the always exciting yet harmonious palette and even the period they convey–his illustrations remind me of those in many books and tv shows I loved when I was growing up. His funniest works, like his raccoon series, are some of my favourites, and now his fun drawings are being printed onto drinking glasses and serving pieces!

Designer Todd Oldham is a huge fan of Charlie Harper’s work and brought it much mainstream attention when he gathered Harper’s prints in a big, beautiful book (you can take a peek at some of the images here), and now again with a new tableware line exclusively for Fishs Eddy. It’s not the first time that Charley Harper illustrations have been imprinted on plates, TAG had a small line for a brief time. But the Fishs Eddy line is more colourful and more iconic, in my opinion. I am coveting the aquarium plate you see at the top. I’m not sure I have any intention of serving anything on it, but it will be a small piece of Charley Harper (and Todd Oldham!) art for my dining room table.

P.S. Todd Oldham lined his amazing living room walls in original Charley Harper works. His home was featured on Metropolitan Home (RIP) and you can still see some of the stunning shots if you search for them. The one below makes me want to move into this room exactly as it is and never leave it.
